More people are switching gas and electricity suppliers in Ireland than in any other country within the European Union and it is driving prices down.
A report by the Commission for Energy Regulation shows almost 80,000 customers have switched electricity supplier and 25,000 customers have switched gas supplier since last year.
The study looks at consumer behaviour in the Irish energy market.
It shows Ireland has the highest gas switching rate and the second highest electricity switching rate within the EU.
The commission says while customer switching continues to be a key indicator of competition, an increasing number of customers are negotiating better terms and prices with their existing suppliers.
In an open market in which the Commission for Energy Regulation no longer regulates prices, it says increased competition drove down prices.
Suppliers also began to announce improved offers for existing and new customers.
