The State ethics watchdog has announced it will launch an investigation into the former manager of Longford County Council.

In a statement, the Standards in Public Office Commission said it "has decided that it is appropriate to initiate an investigation into alleged contraventions of ethics legislation by Mr Tim Caffrey".

SIPO added the inquiry will be separate to an investigation hearing into Mr Caffrey held last September.

The Commission then found Mr Caffrey contravened ethics legislation when he failed to disclose in writing his interest in a property for which the local authority was processing an application to purchase.

It said Mr Caffrey acted negligently to a high degree. At the time, Mr Caffrey said he was very disappointed with the findings and was considering an option of pursuing a judicial review.

SIPO said it will hold a hearing for the "purposes of its investigation" in Dublin on 12 September.

"A further statement concerning the investigation will be issued nearer that date. No further comment will be made in advance of that statement," it added.
