The death toll from a suicide bombing in Baghdad last weekend has reached 292, according to Iraq's Health Ministry.

The attack, claimed by the so-called Islamic State jihadist group, ripped through a crowded shopping area in one of the deadliest ever attacks by militants in Iraq.

More than 200 people were wounded and about 23 of them were still in hospital, health ministry spokesman Ahmed al-Rudaini told Reuters.

Earlier, the ministry had put the death toll at 281 and it rose as more people, registered as missing, were identified as dead, he said.

The area in the capital’s Karrada district was crowded with people shopping ahead of the holiday marking the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
