Minister for Education Richard Bruton has said a new education bill approved by Cabinet will make it easier for parents to access local schools and enrol their children in a school that meets their needs.
The bill proposes to ban waiting lists and fees relating to admissions.
It also requires schools to publish their admission policies, including details of provision for pupils who decline to participate in religious instruction.
It will also ensure that where a school is not oversubscribed all students who apply must be admitted.
Where a child with special needs or otherwise cannot find a place a national council for special education will be able to designate a school.
