Egyptian investigators said tonight that the flight data recorder of crashed EgyptAir flight MS804 has been successfully repaired.

The news paves the way for investigators to analyse data that may explain why the jet crashed into the eastern Mediterranean Sea en route from Paris to Cairo on 19 May, killing all 66 people on board.

The investigators added in a statement that the plane's cockpit voice recorder would begin to be worked on "within hours".

The recorders arrived in Paris from Cairo this morning to remove salt deposits.

They will be sent back to a laboratory in Cairo to analyse the data once the repairs are completed, the statement added.
