Govt departments may get more funding

Some government departments could be allocated more money this year than orginally planned.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe has said he is reviewing the estimates for each department and looking at whether the appropriate expenditure "ceilings" will be the same.

The Taoiseach said it was clear that some changes are going to have to be made.

The departments of health and justice could receive more funding when the revised estimates are brought before the Dáil shortly.

The Minister for Justice yesterday announced a range of new measures to tackle gangland crime while Minister for Health Simon Harris has indicated that the winter initiative would need more home help hours.

More funding for new drugs for cancer may also be needed.

Both departments received supplementary budgets last year but this is not allowed under EU rules this year.

The General Election and formation of a government delayed the revised estimates being brought before the Dáil for approval.

Any additional money would have to be found from the current expenditure pot.

When the Government was formed a number of new departments were announced and this may affect their expenditure requirements.

Meanwhile the budgetary process has begun for 2017 and Fine Gael’s John Paul Phelan has been appointed the temporary chair of the new Budget Scrutiny Committee.
