Gardaí have announced 355 new speed enforcement zones around the country.

From midnight next Friday, there will be over 1,000 speed camera locations around the country.

Safety cameras only operate in areas where there is a history of speed-related collisions.

The locations were identified using the most recent collision statistics after the introduction of the mobile safety camera initiative.

The service provider, GoSafe, conducts 100 hours of surveying a month.

Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid this morning said: "There is no doubt these safety cameras save lives ... they actually operate at a financial loss, but the human savings are incalculable."

The location of the enforcement zones can be seen on the garda website.

An Garda Síochána will also conduct a national "Slow Down" operation starting next Friday morning.

It will commence at 7am and continue for 24 hours.

So far this year 68 people have been killed on the roads, 13 more than this time last year.
