Tributes have been paid to former Fianna Fáil TD Seán Ardagh who died this morning.

Mr Ardagh represented Dublin South Central in the Dáil from 1997 to 2011 and chaired a number of Oireachtas committees.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said Mr Ardagh was one of the "great gentlemen of Irish politics," adding that he was "hard working, courteous and committed."

"He was a very distinguished and assured chairperson of a number of Oireachtas committees. From 2002 to 2007 he chaired the Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights.

"In the 30th Dáil, he led the Committee on the Constitution."

Mr Martin said Mr Ardagh had faced a number of serious health issues during his political career, including treatment for cancer.

His daughter Catherine Ardagh was named Fianna Fáil group leader after winning a seat to Seanad Éireann last month.
