Monday's threatened strike at supermarket Tesco has been suspended to allow for talks at the Workplace Relations Commission.

The Mandate trade union was due to mount pickets at 70 stores in protest at Tesco's plans to transfer around 1,000 long-serving staff to a less generous contract introduced in 1996.

Since the announcement, around 700 of the 1,000 affected employees have accepted a redundancy deal.

However the union was not satisfied with the lump sum compensation offered by Tesco to the remaining 300 staff transferring to the new contract.

Following an invitation from the WRC, Tesco has agreed to defer moving the relevant workers to the new contract - and Mandate has deferred the strike.

Tesco confirmed that all its stores will be open for business as usual on Monday.
