Thirty-one passengers were injured when an Etihad Airways flight experienced "severe and unexpected" turbulence just before landing in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

Etihad said flight EY474, travelling from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta, encountered the turbulence about 45 minutes prior to landing.

"Twenty-two are being treated by paramedics for minor injuries at the airport. Nine other passengers have been taken to a local hospital," Etihad said in a statement.

The plane, an Airbus A330-200, landed safely at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

The turbulence also caused damage to cabin storage areas.
