Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed he has granted a two-month extension to the Cregan inquiry, which is investigating certain transactions at the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation.

Mr Justice Brian Cregan is leading the investigation, into certain transactions, activities and management decisions at the IBRC.

The investigation is focused on the period between 21 January 2009, when IBRC was nationalised, and 7 February 2013, when special liquidators were appointed.

Replying in the Dáil this morning to a question from Social Democrats TD Catherine Murphy, Mr Kenny said the option of a "full-blown public inquiry" was among the options which need to be considered.

Last week, it emerged that issues of confidentiality, in relation to documents provided by the special liquidators and State institutions, were still plaguing the work of the Commission of Investigation.

In his second interim report, Mr Justice Cregan said legislative changes are needed if the commission can proceed with its investigation into the Siteserv transaction, as well as others.
