Luas drivers will not accept pay cuts, says SIPTU

Luas drivers are due to strike tomorrow

Luas tram drivers who are engaged in an industrial dispute over pay will not accept any cuts in their wages as threatened by management, according to their union SIPTU.

Yesterday, Luas operator Transdev threatened to impose pay cuts of 10% from Friday if they continue their work to rule.

The drivers are already due to hold a 24-hour strike tomorrow, which will disrupt the travel plans of up to 90,000 customers.

A further five strike days are scheduled for May.

The three non-driver Luas grades will not be going on strike, as they have resolved their pay dispute with Luas operator Transdev.

In today's statement, SIPTU Divisional Organiser Owen Reidy said members are outraged at the threat of pay cuts, which they described as provocative.

He said workers will not accept the company reducing their pay in response to their pursuit of a lawful and legitimate trade dispute.

He described the threat as an outrageous and provocative act which was clearly designed to bully members into submission.

He described the Transdev approach as unlawful, adding that it would be challenged.

Mr Reidy notes that drivers have compromised and modified their position, but said that having rejected the Workplace Relations Commission proposals, it was logical that they would require some improvement to resolve the dispute.

He said this "progressive" approach had been met with an "over the top" response from Transdev, adding that the drivers remained resolved to see the dispute through.

The drivers were due to meet this evening to consider the latest developments, but that meeting has been deferred to tomorrow evening.
