The outgoing Director General of RTÉ has said that the regulatory system governing public service broadcasting is "broken".
Noel Curran, who will shortly leave his position as head of RTÉ, was speaking at Dublin City University this afternoon.
He said recommendations of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland are consistently ignored and that either the BAI has to be listened to or the legislation changed.
He called for reform of the television Licence Fee, which he said is no longer fit for purpose.
He said the current situation that exempts satellite and cable providers from paying fair compensation for access to channels is unacceptable.
