A review into the care provided to women at the Maternity Unit at Portiuncula Hospital in Co Galway will not be completed before the end of the year.
It is a further delay for families whose care is being assessed. They have now been told the report will not be finalised until early in 2016.
The report was commissioned after the deaths of two babies during childbirth between February and November 2014.
In the same period, a number of other babies were seriously deprived of oxygen during delivery at the maternity unit at the Ballinasloe hospital.
A total of 18 cases are covered by the review.
The Saolta hospital group, which manages Portiuncula, has contacted the families involved to inform them about the latest hold up.
The report was initially due to be completed in five months. That time frame was subsequently extended due to an increase in the number of cases being considered.
In October, a meeting of the Saolta board was told the review was expected by the end of this year.
The review is being chaired by Professor James Walker, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University Of Leeds.
It will identify if there were any deficiencies in the care process and, if so, the extent of these failings.
All families involved have met with investigators and discussions with hospital staff are at an advanced stage.
The review team has reviewed medical charts relevant to the individual cases.
The hospital group says regular checks at the Maternity Unit at Portiuncula show there is no continuing patient safety concern arising from the issues identified last year.
