Serious problems have arisen within the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry with some members questioning whether it will be able to agree a report.
An emergency meeting is due to take place later this evening.
At a cost of €5m, the committee had hoped to table a draft report today but some members have objected to the tone and content of an executive summary which was completed by mid-afternoon.
There are also concerns that there may not be time to have any report legally proofed.
The committee had hoped to circulate a draft to interested parties ahead of formal publication in the new year, and had intended to sign off tomorrow.
There are suggestions tonight that an extension might be sought, but some committee members feel agreement is slipping beyond their grasp.
