Electric Ireland has warned customers to beware of an email phishing scam to obtain customers' debit card details.

The company issued a statement urging people not to complete a bogus form and to contact their debit card company if they have.

Electric Ireland said customers’ personal details on the company’s database were secure and had not been compromised, and that it has reported the matter to the gardaí.

"Electric Ireland is aware that a number of individuals may have received an email purporting to come from Electric Ireland saying that they were eligible to a refund and asking customers to supply bank details and a scanned copy of their passport," the statement said.

"Electric Ireland would like to advise that this was a phishing email attempting to obtain customers debit card details. This email was not sent by Electric Ireland and we are advising those who received this email not to click on the link or reply to the email.

"We would urge any customer who may have completed the form to contact their debit card company or bank immediately using the phone number listed on the back of their debit card. We would also advise such customers to immediately change their password on their Online Billing Account."
