A review into the care provided to women at the Maternity Unit at Portiuncula Hospital in Co Galway is now expected to be completed by the end of the year.
It has emerged that a total of 18 cases are covered by the review.
The report was commissioned after the deaths of two babies during childbirth between February and November last year.
A number of other babies were seriously deprived of oxygen during delivery at the maternity unit at Portiuncula, during the same period.
The review is being chaired by Professor James Walker, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University Of Leeds.
It will identify if there were any deficiencies in the care process and if so, the extent of these failings.
The report was initially due to be completed in five months but that timeframe has been extended due to an increase in the number of cases being considered.
An update on the progress of the review to date was given to the Saolta Hospital Group at a board meeting in Ballinasloe this morning.
All families involved have now met with investigators. Discussions with hospital staff are ongoing.
The review team has reviewed medical charts relevant to the individual cases.
The Saolta group says regular re-audits at the Maternity Unit at Portiuncula have confirmed that there is no continuing patient safety concern arising from the issues identified last year.
