The Islamic Jihad group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in Jerusalem that has killed two people dead and wounded two others.

"Mohannad Shafik Halabi, 19, is a member of Islamic Jihad," a senior member of the group told AFP on condition of anonymity.

His remarks came after Islamic Jihad issued a statement that hailed the attack and said it was in response to Israeli "terrorist crimes" against Palestinians.

The attacker stabbed four people in Jerusalem's Old City, including a two-year-old child, before police shot him dead.

Police also named him as Mohannad Shafiq Halani, aged 19, from a village near Ramallah in the West Bank.

The identities and nationalities of those attacked has not been given.
