Gardaí say they are not treating as suspicious the discovery of a man's body in Dublin city centre this morning.

The man was found at Dawson Lane at approx 7am.

It is understood the man was homeless and had been sleeping rough in the area.

In a statement this evening Pat Doyle, CEO of the Peter McVerry Trust, said the organisation was "deeply saddened" to hear of the death of the man.

Mr Doyle said the man had been "engaging sporadically with the Focus Ireland Peter McVerry Trust Housing First Street Intake Team since December 2014 and we understand had accessed homeless services in Dublin in recent days."

"This tragic incident once again demonstrates the vulnerability of people who are experiencing homelessness and all agencies must redouble their efforts to tackle the issue head on" he said.

In a statement this evening Former Lord Mayor Cllr Christy Burke said Enda Kenny Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly must "prevent further deaths by government inaction".
