Taoiseach Enda Kenny has arrived in the United States where he will attend the UN Summit on Sustainable Development, which begins tomorrow.

Earlier Mr Kenny received an Honorary Degree from Quinnipiac University and visited Ireland's Great Hunger Museum in Connecticut.

Speaking outside the museum he said that it was an important entity, adding that it was very appropriate to come here.

He said it is important in terms of "how we understand the kind of people that we are." "The personality we have as a people and where we have come from and the statistics arising from the Great Hunger. And how it decimated our population and what it has left in our generational personality is very important" he said.

He reflected on the current migrant crisis in Europe, saying that Ireland now makes its own arrangements to help, describing it as a "humanitarian gesture".
