People Before Profit met today in Dublin to discuss the party's policy platform for the General Election.

Members of the group were invited to contribute ideas for the future direction of the party during the three-day open policy conference.

Attendees were addressed by TDs Richard Boyd Barrett and Clare Daly. The conference also included workshops on racism and immigration, and the role of the arts.

People Before Profit confirmed last week that it is joining forces with the Anti-Austerity Alliance to form what it calls a new 'political force'.

The merged grouping will campaign against water charges and austerity, and call for the abolishment of the Universal Social Charge for low and middle-income earners.

Richard Boyd Barrett said the new group will be aiming to 'harness the energy' brought onto the streets by water charge protesters, and 'bringing that movement together in a political form to mount a challenge to the policies of austerity'.

He said left-leaning parties had built an 'unprecedented popular movement of opposition', which would demand that the Government 'prioritise fairness and equality'.
