A baby elephant has been rescued after falling into an uncovered well in the village of Ramakuppam in India.

Villagers said it likely fell while wandering with a herd at night. Locals heard the elephant crying and used a digger to help it climb and escape.

The footage shows the distressed elephant running at the crowds on onlookers after it was freed.

Officials said it was not injured and was later successfully reunited with the rest of the herd.
