Teenage girl airlifted from Croagh Patrick

A 13-year-old girl was airlifted to hospital from the top of Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo this afternoon. 

The teenager was taken ill after ascending to the summit during the morning. 

She was taken by the Shannon-based coastguard helicopter to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.

HK photographer facing Thai jail for bullet-proof vest

A Hong Kong photographer may face five years in jail after he was detained for carrying a bullet-proof vest and helmet while covering the aftermath of last week's deadly shrine bombing, police have said. 

Anthony Kwan Hok-chun, who works for the Hong Kong-based Initium media group, was held by police after trying to depart Suvarnabhumi airport on Sunday.

His lawyer said the preliminary hearings were held at a civilian court in Samut Prakhan province, where her client was charged with breaching Thailand's Arms Control Act.

"Having a bullet-proof vest in possession without permission is subject to five years in jail and/or fine of no more than 50,000 baht ($1,400)," she wrote in a text to AFP.

RSA calls for 30km per hour speed limit in school areas

The Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority says the organisation would recommend a 30km/h speed limit or lower to be enforced in areas where schools are located.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland ahead of the launch of a back-to-school road safety campaign today Moyagh Murdock said the safety of children at school gates needs to be a priority for all road users.

She said it was important to emphasise the importance of road safety to children from an early age.

The RSA is urging all schools and parents to come up with safe traffic management plans around the areas surrounding schools.

Iranian sanctions could be lifted by Spring

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he expected sanctions on Iran could start to be lifted as early as Spring next year.

Speaking on a visit to Tehran to reopen Britain's embassy in the Iranian capital, Mr Hammond said preparatory work should be done ahead of lifting sanctions so investment can start to flow as soon as the measures are removed.

"We could be talking as early as next spring to start to see sanctions lifting off," he said.

Election timing a matter for the Taoiseach - Bruton

Minister for Enterprise Richard Bruton has said the timing of an election is a matter for the Taoiseach and it remains Enda Kenny's position that the Government will run in its full term.

The minister also said that he had no personal views on when an election should take place, saying that the Coalition had a very full agenda.

Asked if there was tension between the two parties, Minister Bruton replied none.
