The Irishman who died after a fall in Tanzania yesterday has been named locally as Govan Byrne from Portmarnock in Dublin.

Mr Byrne, who was in his 20s, is understood to have been travelling with friends in East Africa.

His death is being described as a tragic accident.

His local GAA club, Naomh Mearnog, has paid tribute to Mr Byrne, who was an active member of the club.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said consular assistance is being provided to the man's family in Portmarnock via the embassy in Dar Es Salaam.
