Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan has said the possible infiltration of self-styled Islamic State members to Ireland is of "great concern".

Mr Flanagan said he keeps in close contact with Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald on the issue.

Speaking at a meeting of European Union foreign ministers, Mr Flanagan also said he would like to see increased security cooperation, intelligence gathering and counter terrorism work among EU members.

Tunisian prime minister Habbib Essid also attended the meeting in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack in the country in which 38 tourists, including three Irish citizens, died.

Mr Flanagan said the Department of Foreign Affairs would like to be able to advise people to travel again to Tunisia, but at this time the advice remains people should not go except for essential reasons.

He said: "We are constantly keeping our security advice under review. Arising from the security situation our travel advice will be reviewed and updated in accordance with the situation on the ground in Tunisia."
