Man released in Longford helicopter crash investigation

A man, aged in his 60s, who was arrested following a helicopter crash in Co Longford has been released without charge.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The incident happened at around 9pm on Wednesday when the helicopter struck the outside walls of a pub in Abbeyshrule.

A pilot and a passenger on board the aircraft escaped serious injury.

Islamic State claims suicide car bomb that kills more than 100 in Iraq

More than 100 people were killed in a suicide car bombing at a busy market in an Iraqi town, in one of the deadliest attacks carried out by Islamic State militants since they overran large parts of the country.
              
The blast brought down several buildings in Khan Bani Saad,about 30km northeast of Baghdad, crushing to death people who were celebrating the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
              
Islamic State, which controls large parts of northern and western Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack in the mixed eastern province of Diyala where Khan Bani Saad is located and said the target was "rejectionists", as the group refers to Shia Muslims.
              
Angry crowds went on the rampage after the explosion,smashing the windows of cars parked in the street in grief and anger. Body parts were flung onto the roofs of nearby buildings by the force of the blast, police said.

Dublin Fire Brigade rescue man from River Liffey

A 40-year-old man has been rescued from the River Liffey in Dublin.

Dublin Fire Brigade were called to the scene at about 3.50pm.

Two fire engines, an ambulance and the Fire Service rescue rib boat crew were dispatched to deal with the emergency.

It is understood the rib rescued the man from the water.

He was taken by ambulance to St James' Hospital in Dublin.

Minions teddy breaks US girls three storey fall

A stuffed teddy bear from the hit animated movie "Minions" is credited with breaking the fall of a 5-year-old Colorado girl who suffered only minor injuries after tumbling from a third-story apartment window.
              
The child was playing in a bedroom when she accidentally fell backwards out of an open window, Colorado Springs police said in a statement.
              
"Fortunately, when the child fell out of the window she continued holding on to a stuffed Minion teddy bear that is believed to have cushioned her fall," the statement said.
              
The girl was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for a broken arm and released.      

Three girls believed behind Nigerian bomb attack

Three young girls are believed to have carried out a suicide bomb attack in northern Nigeria killing 13 people.

A police spokesman said the attacks in the city of Damaturu, in which 15 people were also injured, were carried out by "three underage girls".

Boko Haram militants have carried out a number of attacks in northeast Nigeria in recent months and over the past year the group has used several female suicide bombers.

Twin explosions near a prayer ground in Damaturu killed two people, with a third blast a short time later near a mosque killing another 11 people.

Twomey says not contesting next general election

Fine Gael TD Liam Twomey has announced that he will not be standing in the next general election.

The Wexford deputy cited family reasons for his decision.

Mr Twomey was a former health spokesman for the party and is currently chair of the Finance Committee.

In a statement, he said "It has been a huge honour to represent the people of Wexford throughout my political career and I thank them for their support. I will continue in my duties representing my constituents until the date of the election."

Guard's entered El Chapo's cell 18 minutes after escape

It took 18 minutes for prison guards to go into Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's cell after they noticed that he vanished from his cell.

Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said guards who monitored the surveillance cameras inside Guzman's cell "immediately" sounded the alarm when they noticed that "he was no longer there" late on Saturday.

Prosecutors are investigating whether the prison's protocols were properly followed, he said.

It was the first time that officials said how long it took for guards to respond after Guzman disappeared into a hole on the floor of his shower.

Army Bomb Disposal Team render hand grenade safe

The Army Bomb Disposal team has rendered safe a hand grenade in the O'Hanlon Park area of Dundalk, Co Louth.The team was called to a waste ground at 7pm.

It removed the grenade to a secure military location and destroyed it by a controlled explosion.
