After an eight week mission in the Mediterranean the LÉ Eithne has departed from Malta on its week long journey home.

The ship that will replace it on the humanitarian mission to rescue migrants attempting to cross to Europe from North Africa, the LÉ Niamh, this evening set sail.

The two ships are expected to meet at sea on Tuesday.

Two crew members from the LÉ Niamh that have been briefed for the last few days on board the LÉ Eithne will transfer back to their ship as they pass.  

The LÉ Niamh and its crew of 57 personnel will remain in the Mediterranean until September
