A picture has been released of Dublin student Jack Halpin who was seriously injured in the Berkeley balcony collapse last month.

The 21-year-old St Judes GAA player suffered spinal injuries, a broken hip, broken leg, a shattered knee-cap and internal injuries.

A statement on the fundraising 'Judes for Jack' website said Mr Halpin, who was in California after finishing his commerce degree in UCD, faces a "very tough ordeal in the months ahead."

It said: "When his doctors have done all they can for him, a very long and complicated course of rehabilitation begins, involving, among other things, complex and intensive physiotherapy.

"There will also, unavoidably, have to be modifications to Jack’s home."

It added that the Halpin family wished to thank all those who have offered prayers and support for "Jack and all those affected by the events in Berkeley."

In the photo, a smiling Mr Halpin, is seen giving a thumbs up from his hospital bed.

The family of Clodagh Cogley, who was also seriously injured, has previously thanked Mr Halpin after it emerged that he had helped break her fall when the balcony on the fourth floor of an apartment building collapsed.

In a Facebook post, Ms Cogley’s brother Daragh wrote "Clodagh wanted to say particular thanks to Jack Halpin for grabbing her and breaking her fall".

Ms Cogley is recovering at a rehabilitation centre in San Francisco. In a Facebook post the 21-year-old explained that she had broken her spinal cord, shoulder, knee and five ribs and the chances of her walking again were "pretty bleak".

Another student who was critically injured has started to wake from an induced coma.

Aoife Beary has been treated at the Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, California, since being transferred from Highland Hospital on 26 June.

She has been taken off the critical list but is still in intensive care. Her condition has improved over recent days following successful heart surgery.

Two of the seven people injured have since been released from hospital.

Conor Flynn is still in the San Francisco area as he is not yet permitted to fly, while Sean Fahey has returned to Ireland following treatment.

Niall Murray and Hannah Waters are both still receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

Five Irish students in California on J1 visas and one Irish-American - Eoghan Culligan, Eimear Walsh, Niccolai Schuster, Olivia Burke, Lorcán Miller and Ashley Donohoe - died in the balcony collapse.
