Hundreds of followers celebrated the Dalai Lama's 80th birthday in India with traditional song and dance and offerings of cake and sweets.
In the United States, thousands more supporters threw the visiting Nobel laureate a birthday bash in California.
The spiritual leader already marked his official birthday last month, according to the Tibetan lunar calendar -- in Dharamsala, the north Indian hill town where he has lived since fleeing Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule.
In more celebrations there today, school children and community groups performed traditional dances and sang cultural songs.
Other followers placed three-tiered cakes and platters of sweets and fruit before images of the crimson-robed 14th Dalai Lama.
The leader of the government-in-exile wished the Dalai Lama a happy birthday on behalf of all Tibetans, thanking him for his tireless efforts on behalf of Tibet.
"Tibetans both inside and outside Tibet, as well as millions of others touched by His Holiness the Dalai Lama's message of peace and non-violence, observe this special occasion with immense delight," Lobsang Sangay said.
"His Holiness is the life and soul of Tibet and the Tibetan people."
