An emergency declared on an aircraft which was travelling from Amsterdam to Atlanta, which landed at Shannon shortly before 3pm, has been stood down.

There were 392 passengers and crew on board the Delta Flight 73 when it requested that it make an emergency landing at Shannon, after a smoke alarm went off in the rear cargo hold.

An inspection has found there was no smoke or fire onboard the aircraft.

The passengers have disembarked, and the airline is making alternative travel arrangements for them.

An investigation is under way into what may have caused the alert.
