The union representing lower-paid civil servants is to recommend acceptance of the Lansdowne Road Agreement in a ballot later this summer.

The executive committee of the Civil Public and Services Union noted the "relentless" hardship imposed through cuts in pay and conditions and the imposition of additional working hours.

It added that the limited pay restoration now on offer is greatly needed by the union's members to help reduce the heavy burden imposed on them by their Government employer.

It says that in light of that need, the executive is recommending a Yes vote on the LRA.

But it says it will continue to actively campaign for the full restoration of all cuts imposed since 2008.

It also warns it will join like-minded unions to highlight the imperative for members and their families to vote only for candidates in the next general election who have supported the restoration of pay for public servants.

In a statement, the CPSU reaffirms its disappointment over the level of pay restoration in the latest public sector pay agreement.

It says this resulted from the failure of the Government to provide sufficient funds to ensure the pay of all lower-paid public service workers was restored to 2008 levels.

It also criticises the Government for failing to allow the management side to negotiate on removing the additional unpaid working hours imposed in the Haddington Road Agreement.

However, the CPSU welcomed the use of a flat rate mechanism for pay restoration to prioritise lower-paid workers and called for it to be used as a model for future pay negotiations.
