The Health Service Executive has apologised after it sent a tweet today which said that for cuts, scrapes and allergies, people should use their GP Visit Card, or under-six GP Visit Card.

The executive said the wording was "poorly thought out" and no upset or offence was intended.

It has since deleted the tweet.

Chris Goodey, Chief Executive of the National Association of GPs, said there were clearly elements in the HSE who do not understand what is done in general practice.

He said the association would be writing to the Minister for Health to ask what other campaigns regarding free GP care for the under sixes were planned.
