Result of second BSE test expected soon

The Minister for Agriculture has said the second test on a cow with suspected BSE in Co Louth is expected either at the end of this week and the start of next week. 

Simon Coveney was responding to Opposition TDs in the Dáil this afternoon during Topical Issues. 

Mr Coveney said when a country like Ireland has dealt comprehensively with a historical BSE problem, there can be the odd isolated case. 

20 hurt in UK troop carrier collision

Up to 20 UK military personnel have been injured in a crash between three troop carriers on Salisbury Plain.

At least four people have been left with "life changing injuries" while the others are "walking wounded" following the incident, which happened at 6.30pm today in a field near Westdown Camp.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: "We received a call from the air ambulance at 6.30pm today who told us they were attending.

"First responders and three military ambulances were also at the location. We had reports of four to five people with life changing injuries and approximately 16 others 'walking wounded'."

Army make viable device safe in Dublin

An Army Bomb Disposal Team was deployed after a viable Improvised Explosive Device was found outside a house in Newcastle, Co Dublin last night.

The team arrived at the scene at 4.35am and the device was made safe by 5.45am.

Further examination revealed it was a viable bomb and items have been given to gardaí to assist an investigation.

Tall ship due sails into Dublin Port

One of the world's largest Tall Ships sailed into Dublin Port today for a five-day visit to the capital.  

The 1,800 tonnes, 67 metres long and nine metres high Cuauhtémoc is a sail training vessel of the Mexican Navy. 

US votes to ban torture during interrogations

The United States Senate has voted overwhelmingly to ban torture during interrogations.

The measure aimed at ending brutal techniques that were used on terror suspects following the 9/11 attacks of 2001.  

Should the amendment become law, it would require that the International Committee of the Red Cross be provided access to detainees in US government custody.
