The Taoiseach is launching the Aer Lingus American College Football Classic at the Mansion House this afternoon.

LÉ Eithne rescues 12 migrants in Mediterranean

Personnel onboard the LÉ Eithne have rescued 12 persons from a small craft in the Mediterranean.

A distress message was relayed last night, and the vessel was discovered 30 miles north of Lampedusa at 9am this morning.

This is the fourth successful operation the LÉ Eithne has undertaken since its departure from Cork, rescuing 649 migrants since commencing operations.

Beades to face court over traffic offences

Jerry Beades of the New Land League has been sent for trial in relation to two road traffic offences. 

Mr Beades, of Richmond Avenue, Fairview, appeared at Dublin District Court where he pleaded not guilty to parking in a manner which obstructed traffic and failing to provide identification to gardaí on 14 November 2014 at Richmond Avenue. 

Judge Patrick Clyne set a trial date of 7 November.

Refugees transferred from Australia arrive in Cambodia

The first asylum seekers from a remote South Pacific detention centre arrived in Cambodia under a controversial Australian resettlement scheme that critics say amounts to dumping refugees and shirking international obligations.

The three Iranians and one Rohingya Muslim are the only ones among 677detainees on Nauru island to so far take up a resettlement offer struck between the two countries last September.

Phnom Penh will receive A$40 million in additional aid under the resettlement deal, which has been condemned by rights groups and opposition politicians.

Australia failed to establish a similar resettlement deal with Malaysia, when Australia's High Court ruled it unconstitutional.

Five Ukrainian soldiers killed 

At least 24 killed in renewed fighting in eastern Ukraine

Five Ukrainian servicemen were killed in fighting in eastern Ukraine yesterday, mostly near the government-held town of Maryinka where pro-Russian rebels were trying to make a significant advance.

A presidential aide said on his Facebook page that 39 other Ukrainians were wounded.

Ukraine's defence ministry said that separatists, using tanks and artillery, had tried to take government positions near Maryinka, to the east of the rebel-held city of Donetsk, in violation of a ceasefire declared in February.

They were beaten back after nearly 12 hours of fighting, the defence ministry said.

Man stabbed at house in Rush, Co Dublin

A man in his 30s was stabbed at his home in Rush, Co Dublin, last night.

The man was confronted at his house on Palmer Court at around 8pm by at least one man.

The victim was stabbed in the leg and upper body.

He is being treated at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin but his injuries are not life-threatening.

No arrests have been made.  Gardaí are investigating the attack.

Mubarak faces retrial over 2011 killing of protesters

Egypt's high court said former president Hosni Mubarak would be retried in the case of the 2011 killing of protesters.

The judge accepted the public prosecution's appeal against an earlier court ruling that dropped the case against Mubarak.

The judge said the retrial would begin on 5 November.

Grant Thornton to add 71 jobs in Belfast

Tax and audit firm Grant Thornton is expanding in Belfast and creating 71 jobs.

The move will bring its payroll in the city to 400. Most of the jobs involve administrative work.

Economy Minister Jonathan Bell said the posts paid combined salaries of £1.2m.

He said they were being created "in this location against competition from other Grant Thornton offices in the Republic and the rest of the UK".
