An automated camera system targeting drivers who break red lights is in operation at one of the busiest junctions on the Luas Red Line in central Dublin.

Motorists breaking a red light will automatically receive three penalty points and a fine of up to €120.

Penalty points will increase to five if there is a court conviction.

The first such system in Ireland was introduced this morning at the Blackhall Place-Benburb Street junction, in response to the large number of collisions there between road vehicles and trams.

In an effort to improve safety, a camera linked directly to the Garda PULSE system will capture any vehicle that breaks the red light.

It is understood the system may be rolled out to other junctions.

Since the Luas went into operation in 2004 there have been 338 collisions between trams and motor vehicles and 95% have occurred on the Red Line, which serves Saggart and Tallaght to the city centre.
