A spokesperson for the McHale company in Co Mayo has said management will need a number of days to fully assess the impact of last night's fire on the business.

The blaze at the manufacturing facility in Ballinrobe was extinguished after several hours.

It is understood the paint room - where the fire is thought to have started - and the parts store at the factory sustained the worst damage.

Offices and a major new extension to the plant were not badly impacted. There were no reports of any injuries as a result of the fire.

The company says it's extremely grateful to the fire service and members of the public who assisted in the effort to put out the blaze.

A number of local farmers travelled to the factory yesterday evening with tankers of water to help deal with the incident.

An investigation is under way to try to establish the cause of the fire.

Several units of the fire service spent hours tackling the blaze at the facility.

The company makes a range of products for the agricultural sector and is probably best known for its balers, which are exported to around 50 countries.

It is a major employer in Co Mayo with around 270 people working at the Ballinrobe plant.

The firm has a full order book for most of this year and is planning a major expansion of its facility, which would add a further 18,000 square metres to the operation and greatly enhance output.
