A unicyclist is in a serious condition in hospital after being freed by scores of people who rushed to lift a bus that he was trapped under in east London yesterday.
The incident happened in Walthamstow in north-east London just before 6pm.
"They somehow managed to pull the bus away a bit. We were amazed. It was a heavy bus, a double-decker. Police were here straightaway and they took over."
Another witness, Kyra Sam, told the Standard: "I'm really amazed at the strength of Walthamstow. No-one hesitated to push the bus off. I was in shock."
She added: "Everyone really came together to help. It was really nice to see that in the face of something so awful."
Off-duty Paramedic Manager Stephen Hynes was the first medic on the scene.
"When I got there the patient was already out from under the bus and members of public said they had freed him by lifting the bus. It was definitely a great help to me as it meant I could start treating him straight away,” he said.
The unicyclist was treated for serious leg injuries and given pain relief before being taken to the Royal London Hospital.
Metropolitan Police said there have been no arrests.
