A world-renowned extreme athlete has died along with another man during a stunt in Yosemite National Park in California.
Extreme athlete Dean Potter and his climbing partner, Graham Hunt, died during a BASE jumping stunt, which involves parachuting from buildings and cliffs.
A Yosemite National Park spokesman confirmed the men were killed during a jump at Taft Point on Saturday.
Park officials became aware that an accident took place on Saturday evening and two bodies were found during a helicopter search yesterday morning.
The bodies were later identified as Mr Potter and Mr Hunt.
Reports suggest that the pair had been attempting a wingsuit flight from Taft Point but crashed into a rocky outcrop when they tried to fly through a narrow gap in the mountains.
On Mr Potter's official Facebook page, where he describes himself as "artist, adventurer, athlete", extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the world paid tribute to him.
In an interview with The New York Times in 2008, Mr Potter said: "Part of me says it's kind of crazy to think you can fly your human body.”
"Another part of me thinks all of us have had the dream that we can fly. Why not chase after it? Maybe it brings you to some other tangent. Chasing after the unattainable is the fun part."
BASE stands for buildings, antennas, spans and Earth that jumpers can parachute from.
The sport is illegal in US national parks, including Yosemite.
