President Michael D Higgins begins his official visit to Turkey today, where he is due to attend a dinner hosted by his Turkish counterpart.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan will be the guest of honour at a trade lunch in Istanbul.

Lunch aims to boost trade between Ireland and Turkey

The President’s first engagement today is an academic event to mark the centenary of World War I.

Tomorrow he will travel to Gallipoli for the centrepiece of this visit, where he will join the other world leaders attending the commemorations of the campaign that cost over 3,000 Irish lives.

He is expected to meet Britain’s Prince Charles and Prince Harry there.

Later today President Higgins meets the Turkish prime minister and will attend a dinner hosted by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

Separately, Minister Flanagan will host a trade lunch aimed at boosting trade between the two countries.
