The mother of a newborn baby girl abandoned in toilets in England last night has been found and is receiving medical treatment.

Police had been trying to identify the mother after the little girl was found inside public toilets in Southport just hours after being born.

Staff at the Ormskirk Hospital, where the baby is being treated, have named her April.

Emergency services were called to an amusement arcade at around 6.50pm yesterday after staff found the baby inside the disabled toilets.

Pictures released by police show the infant dressed in a floral-patterned pink baby grow provided by the staff.

A police spokesman said there was evidence to suggest the baby was "born where she was found" and that she was "safe and well" in hospital.

Detective Inspector Mike Dalton said the primary concern was for the health of the baby girl's mother.
