More than 12 firefighters tackled a fire on the outskirts of Waterford City today.

The fire is believed to have started in bales of hay in a field near Avondale.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen for over a mile from the location.

Meanwhile, fire crews from Dublin and Wicklow are this evening dealing with a large gorse fire in the Dublin Mountains.

A spokesperson for the Dublin Fire Brigade said the fire spread rapidly on the mountain side near Glencree.

There are no reports of any homes or property being in danger.
