A psychiatric nurse who was suspended from duty for speaking to the media has been told by the Health Service Executive he can return to work.

Des McSweeney, a mental health nurse at Cork University Hospital and a SIPTU shop steward, said he received an email from the HSE late on Friday night.

It followed a threat by the Psychiatric Nurses' Association on Friday to withdraw from talks designed to resolve a row over the opening of a psychiatric facility on the grounds of Cork University Hospital if Mr McSweeney was not allow return to work.

He had been put off duty for his public criticism of the HSE's new €15m psychiatric facility, which had been due to open in January.

Mr McSweeney said he had received messages from all over the country supporting his stance.

He said he would be attending the Labour Relations Commission meeting on 28 and 29 April that was convened in an effort to resolve issues delaying the opening of the new facility.
