A rare eastern bongo calf has been born at Dublin Zoo.

The new arrival, who was born last week and weighing 20kg, brings the herd at the zoo to four and is a significant addition to its international breeding programme.

The eastern bongo is a critically endangered species with less than 100 thought to exist in the wild in Kenya.

The calf was born to first-time mother Nanyuki and father Hodari.

Dublin Zoo team leader Helen Clarke-Bennett said Nanyuki is proving to be an excellent mother and the healthy calf is feeding well and has already been introduced to its father.

The calf's gender is not yet known.

Bongos are characterised by a reddish brown coat with black and white markings, white-yellow stripes and long and slightly, spiralled horns.
