An Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe a historic yet viable Mills type grenade in the Phoenix Park, Co Dublin this evening.

The suspect object was found protruding from the grass by members of the public.

Defence Forces transferred the grenade from the scene at 3.30pm to an open area where it was rendered safe by a controlled explosion. 

The scene was declared safe at 4.10 pm. 

This type of grenade is early 20th century in origin and was utilised during the War of Independence, the Civil War and World Wars I and II.
