Two elephants came to the rescue in the United States yesterday, when a truck became stranded at the side of a road in Louisiana.

The elephants prevented the vehicle from overturning when the truck driver, who is an elephant trainer, directed them to help prop up the vehicle.

Photos showed the elephants, leaning side by side, pushing with their weight against the truck.

The vehicle was carrying the three elephants from Florida, after a stop in New Orleans, they were on their way to a circus near Dallas.

The truck had pulled over to an interstate shoulder near Powhatan but the ground was soft after recent rains and the vehicle got into difficulty.

Sheriffs who attended the scene said the driver walked the elephants back onto the truck using spoken commands.

The elephants were unharmed and continued on their way.
