Surfer trapped at base of Cliffs of Moher is rescued

A surfer, who had been marooned in water at the base of the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare, has been rescued and brought by helicopter to University Hospital Galway.

The man had been reported missing after 5pm but made it to shore at the base of a 700ft cliff from, where the helicopter successfully rescued him tonight. 

The man had earlier been surfing in strong winds on high waves off the coast.

A rescue helicopter from Sligo, along with the RNLI lifeboat from the Aran Islands, assisted in the rescue.

Doolin Coast Guard was on standby for the rescue.
