A South African charity has launched a powerful domestic abuse campaign based on ‘The Dress’ debate which split social media users last week.

The South African branch of the Salvation Army’s campaign features the tag line "Why is it so hard to see black and blue?"

Beneath that is the phrase: "The only illusion is if you think it was her choice. One in six women are victims of abuse. Stop abuse against women."

Last week, a Tumblr user generated a storm of online debate after she uploaded a picture of a blue and black dress which appeared to many like it was white and gold.

The hashtag #TheDress led trends on Twitter worldwide, boosted by a stream of tweets from celebrities voicing support for either of the opposing camps.
