The group that represents unmarried parents has welcomed comments by Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald indicating that she is open to considering automatic guardianship for unmarried fathers who are committed to their children, but who are not cohabiting.
Treoir has described the comments made in the Dáil this afternoon as very significant.
Earlier Ms Fitzgerald said that she was open to suggestions on how to make guardianship automatic.
Speaking during the debate on the Children and Family Relationships Bill, she said her policy approach was based on the best interests of the child, but she would consider this at committee stage.
However, she said there was not a clear concensus on this approach
Treoir also welcomed Ms Fitzgerald's indications that she would examine the need for a central register in relation to guardianship.
The group said they looked forward to being established in the near future.
They said anything that would improve the position of non-cohabiting unmarried fathers and their children would be hugely beneficial.
