A dispute over staffing levels and overcrowding at the Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar has been resolved after talks between the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation and the Health Service Executive.

Nurses at the hospital had voted to strike because of conditions for patients.

However, a resolution announced today confirms that 90 posts will be filled in the hospital.

35 of these posts are new posts and the rest are replacement of staff who have left.

Staff will be recruited for ten new positions in the emergency department, 26 new midwife roles in the maternity unit and 15 nurses will be recruited for general ward roles.

The remaining posts will replace staff who have left the hospital.

The HSE has also guaranteed 100% contracts to graduate nurses, backdated to October 2014.
