Hundreds of people took part in a demonstration against water charges in Tallaght this afternoon.

They were also demonstrating against the recent arrests of anti-water charges protesters.

Two groups gathered at separate locations and marched towards Tallaght Garda Station, where they were joined by others.

The protesters then marched to the Civic Theatre in Tallaght for a rally.

Gardai estimated about 400-500 people took part.

The Anti-Austerity Alliance member and Socialist TD Paul Murphy, who took part in the protest, estimated the figure was closer to 700.

Mr  Murphy was one of those arrested earlier this week in connection with a protest in Jobstown in November when Tánaiste Joan Burton was trapped in her car for two hours.

The next national Right 2 Water campaign protest is planned for 21 March.
